Electricity and Energy
Electrical Power Overview

The organisation responsible for electricity production and supply is the Office National de I'Electricity, known as I'ONE. There are 14 local urban distribution companies to which I'ONE sells electricity in bulk.

The bulk of the electricity supply in Morocco comes from thermal stations and uses coal and oil. Electricity is imported from Algeria and Spain and the Moroccan government is encouraging increased hydroelectricity production. Morocco has four perennial rivers and many dams have been built with potential for power generation. Funds are to be spent on extending electricity supply to rural areas.

The government has confirmed that there will be opportunities for private sector in the expansion of Morocco's energy supply system. It is hoped that independent power projects will provide half of the investment necessary to meet rising demand for power.

Morocco has an installed generation capacity of 4100 MW, with 70% from thermal sources and the balance from hydroelectric. Electricity demand In Morocco is increasing at 7% per annum, however, only 15% of the rural population have access to electricity.

Mohammedia and Jorf Lasfar are the largest power plants and run off imported coal from South Africa.

Energy

The sectors of energy and mining contribute 10% of the GDP. The revenues that they generate illustrate the importance of these sectors.

  • Around 20% of the state's fiscal returns.
  • 13 billion Dh of remittances from mining exports, including 11 billion from phosphates and by-products, or 30% of the country's total exports.
  • Investments: over 8 billion Dh.
  • The number of direct jobs is 75,000 including 46,600 in mining.

Being a country that does not produce energy, Morocco depends for over 90% of its energy products supplies on exports. National energy consumption stands at around 8.4 mln TEP. The share of oil products in this consumption stands at 68.4%, that of coal at 25%.
